“Jimmy has a unique ability to capture the most extraordinary and stunning footage while navigating dangerous gravity-defying sports like rock climbing and extreme skiing,” he said David Roger, co-founder and CEO of MasterClass. “It’s inspiring to learn from someone whose background didn’t put him on the obvious path to becoming one of the best adventure photographers in the world. It’s this unrelenting passion for defying all odds and overcoming obstacles that has driven him to do what he loves at the highest level and that’s why I’m delighted that he’s our newest MasterClass Instructor.”
As one of the most prolific adventure photographers in the world Jimmy Chin demonstrates an unparalleled mastery of both extreme exploration and visual storytelling. His success is defined by his ability to infuse that natural passion into his art, with photos from his harrowing expeditions around the world appearing on the cover of National Geographic and The Magazine of the New York Timesand featured in Adventure, Outdoor, Men’s Journal, ESPN Magazine, as well as catalogs from The North Face and Patagonia. Chin’s work has earned him awards from Photo District News (PDN), Communication Arts, and the American Society of Magazine Editors. In 2015, Chin took his career to the next level by producing his first feature-length documentary. meru, which won the coveted audience award at the Sundance Film Festival and was on the 2016 Oscar shortlist for best documentary. His second film built on that dynamic. Free Solowhich was hailed by critics as one of the best documentaries of 2018.
“All my life I have been fortunate to see and experience a world that most people believe is out of reach,” says Chin. “My hope is to show students that they too can combine their passion for adventure with their jobs. I want to introduce people to my world of photography and inspire them to solve their biggest challenges, regardless of their experience level. “
In his MasterClass, Chin takes a holistic approach to teaching his photography style, guiding students through the entire creative process, from inspiration to post-production. With the help of his friend and mentor, Konrad AnkerChin takes students to a photo shoot in the Grand Tetons Wyoming. He also shares exclusive behind-the-scenes footage and strategies from past shoots in remote locations around the world, demonstrating the real-world challenges and solutions involved in capturing unforgettable footage in nature. Designed for photographers of all levels, the course combines lessons in creative decision-making and leadership with more technical processes such as photo selection and post-production. Chin’s students will go home with a deeper understanding of outdoor photography, ultimately taking their photos to new heights – both literally and figuratively.
